78.9 percent of all websites run on PHP. PHP (acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely used general purpose scripting language that is especially suitable for web development and can be embedded in HTML.

What distinguishes PHP from JavaScript for example is that the code is executed on the server, generating HTML code which is then sent to the client. The client would receive the results of the execution of that script, but would not know which code was the basis.
