Red Hat has just killed CentOS and CloudLinux is offering to develop an open-source RHEL & Community Driven fork. Here is what they said:
As we are already maintaining the CloudLinux operating system, we intend to launch a free, open-source, community-based, 1: 1 binary compatible fork of RHEL® 8 (and future versions) in the first quarter of 2021. We will create a separate system, totally free operating system that is fully binary compatible with RHEL® 8 (and future versions). We will sponsor the development and maintenance of such an operating system. We will work to establish a community around the operating system, with the board of directors of the community members.
If you run CloudLinux OS 8 - it will continue to have stable and well-tested updates until 2029, and ELS will be released years after that.
If you are running CentOS 8 - they will launch an operating system similar to CentOS 8 based on stable RHEL 8. They will provide stable and well-tested updates by 2029 - completely free. You will also be able to convert CentOS 8 to CloudLinux 8 with a single command.
