Mapbox users learned in December 2020 that the Mapbox GL JS 2.0 was released under a proprietary license. Older versions of the JavaScript library will remain open source, but Mapbox will create features exclusively for the patented version.
In response, the Mapbox community launched MapLibre GL as the open source successor to the Mapbox GL JS, which will allow developers to use self-hosted maps.
If you have integrated Mapbox GL JS version 1.13 or older, the MapLibre project is a powerful open source alternative to the latest proprietary Mapbox 2.0 update.
