How to install a Wacom tablet in Ubuntu

For a detailed guide that also has screenshots about "Extended input devices" in graphics applications, read the official Dapper guide at https://wiki.ubuntu.com//Wacom

In version (0.7.2) of the Linux driver for the Wacom tablet in Ubuntu, if you disconnect the tablet from the system it will no longer work. When you connect it back you had to restart X. Because of this it is better to leave the tablet connected all the time. This limitation will be removed with version (0.7.4) that will be included in Ubuntu.

1. using the Synaptic manager, check if the xserver-xorg-input-wacom and wacom-tools packages are already installed - if not, install them. If you prefer to use the command line for this then run:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-wacom wacom-tools

2. Make a copy of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup

Then edit it by running on the command line:

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and change all occurrences of the text / dev / wacom to / dev / input / wacom (created by the wacom-tools script), and then save the previously edited file.

The tablet will work after a restart of X. Don't forget to configure "Extended input devices" in graphics applications (Gimp, Inkscape).

Even without this configuration you can still check if the tablet is functional by moving the stylus on the tablet: the cursor should move on the screen.
