Internet connection via PPPoE in Mandriva

Setting up an Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) connection using the Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) protocol is very simple by following these steps:

1. To configure the connection, run the root command

adsl-setup

or

pppoe-setup

(in case of distributions - eg Ubuntu - the command is pppoesetup).

If you receive the message that the command is not known, the rp-pppoe package must be installed.

2. Fill in the required data:

Enter your PPPoE user name: enter the user name received from the Internet provider

Enter the Ethernet interface connected to the DSL modem (default ethx): here it is usually Enter (even if there are several network cards in the system, the one connected to the modem is automatically detected and appears in parentheses as default)

Do you want the link to come up on demand, or stay up continuously? ... Enter the demand value (default no): the default option is preferred, enter Enter

Enter the DNS information here: enter the primary and secondary DNS, which if not known are required from the provider (for the RDS provider under the Mandriva distribution I did not need to enter anything here. But under Slackware, if I did not enter DNS, Internet connection did not work)

Please enter your PPPoE password: enter the password received from the provider

Choose a type of firewall (0-2): choose 0, 1 or 2 (for novices in using linux recommended 0 or 1)

Accept these settings and adjust configuration files (y / n)? choose 'yes' and Enter (with this the configuration of the connection has ended).

3. Starting the connection is done using the root command

adsl-start

or

pppoe-start

4. If you want to stop the connection, run

adsl-stop

or

pppoe-stop

5. In order for the connection to start automatically at boot, go to '/etc/rc.d/rc.local'

adsl-start

or

pppoe-start
