Samsung Electronics has announced the adoption of OpenChain ISO - the first international open source compliance standard

The company joins a growing community of companies in the field of consumer electronics, automotive, cloud computing and telecommunications in the use of this standard for supply chain management.

The OpenChain project began in 2016 as an initiative of the Linux Foundation, a non-profit organization in the United States with the goal of establishing an efficient and coherent open source compliance system.

The OpenChain project was adopted as an international ISO / IEC standard in 2020. The project assesses the open source compliance capabilities of each company and awards certification if they meet the criteria.

"Samsung Electronics is leading the adoption and use of open source technology to create innovative products," said Seungbeom Choi, executive vice president and head of R&D strategy at Samsung Electronics. "At the heart of this is the organizations and processes specially created to safely and efficiently use open source. The adoption of OpenChain ISO 5230 reflects our ongoing commitment to excellence in our field. Samsung Electronics is expected to increase its credibility by recognizing its ability to use open source through this certification. We look forward to working with other industry leaders around this standard. ”

"Open source provides an unparalleled platform for innovation," said Shane Coughlan, CEO of OpenChain. "To make the most of this platform, the key is to have efficient and effective processes. OpenChain ISO 5230 delivers this for licensed compliance activities. We are excited to welcome Samsung Electronics to our compliance community. Their leadership in this field will help us accelerate our mission throughout the supply chain. ”

The OpenChain project maintains the international standard for open source license compliance. This allows companies of all sizes and from all sectors to adopt the key requirements of a quality open source compliance program. This is an open standard and all parties are welcome to engage with our community, share their knowledge and contribute to the future of our standard.
